Artist statement

Hola, I’m Jawara Blake, an West Indian Afro-Latino painter based in Maryland. My work is heavily influenced by my roots and explores concepts of culture, patterns and flavors. Through a mix of vibrant colors and dream-like surrealism, I want to spark conversations and connect with people on a deeper level. As a self-taught artist, I am constantly discovering boundaries and experimenting with different techniques to make my visions come to life. My goal is to create thought-provoking and visually stunning work that celebrate the beauty and complexity of being West Indian Afro-Latino.

A hand reaching out from South American culture giving tastes of culture

Most of my work these days is made up of ink, paper and watercolors. The sizes range from 5 ft to around 1 ft. I live in color and symbolism.

A high light of my life’s work so far

All I am is the marks I leave in the world with my heart and ink and paint. I keep coming back to the best part of my life is when I’m completely locked in on making and being happy.
